about

History has proven music can play a powerful role in creating social change. Music can educate, inspire and provoke. Its ability to communicate goes deeper than words: it can reach places where traditional protest cannot.

For these reasons music can enhance social movements, but protest can influence music too. The boldness and creativity of activism is its own kind of artwork – one that likewise can reach beyond the gallery walls and concert venues where art is at times confined. The dynamism of political activism and the community of social movements are fertile ground for inspiring art and music.

The music and poetry on this album are from artists who don’t see their creative pursuits as separate from politics. They are people from around the country who have come to the climate frontlines in central Queensland to disrupt the construction of Adani’s Carmichael coal mine. Many of these songs were sung and even recorded at Camp Binbee, the home of the movement to blockade Adani. They are the sound of nights around the campfire, of picket line singalongs, and of parties celebrating the possibilities of direct action.

They sing of the climate crisis we are living in, but also of the ability of ordinary people to resist. Their rhythm is the sound of beating hearts fighting to stay alive; their melody the tune of imagined futures yet to come. Wonderful songs as they are, none of them are the finished product. They are each one element of the ultimate creative act, which is the sculpting of a better world.
